Postby TheSnapper » Tue Oct 14, 2008 10:33 am

Is there one available - eg for Stretcher bars etc?

Cheers

Hi Tim

I don't know of a detailing kit for the Heljan Hymek, but I've just done the same job that you're planning using all sorts of bits and pieces!

If it's any help, I used Severnmill bodyside numbers and builders plates, DJH cocks and pipes for the buffer beams, HMRS BR double arrows (mines a blue one and they cover the existing ones perfectly), Tower Models screw couplings and Precision Decals for the data panels. The yellow triangle coupling codes on the buffer beam were cut from Fox Transfers 4mm Pack F4410 (Railfreight Distribution logos), using a very sharp knife. I replaced the headcode panels with some spares from the Heljan 47, cut to size.

Everything else was scratch built from plastic card and sections. The Multiple Unit cable into the dummy socket was made from the hose that comes with the DJH set.

The scratch bits needed to achieve a fair result are (I think):

Dummy MU receptacle
Coupler back plate(to protect the air reservoir beneath the cab)
Drivers side bufferbeam footstep
bogie headstock with piping
lower bodyside radiator filler/drain
lower bodyside electric junction box
pipes into both sides of the air reservoir

All this together with a complete black underframe repaint and (with a lot of masking) repaints of the cab side sheets after removing the printed numbers with a burnishing pencil, results in a fair representation of the real thing.

I could download some photos if that would help

Have fun!

Have a chat with PR models, they do a conversion kit for the old triang big train hymek, and I dare say they would do you a set of bufferbeam bits... They've done me air brake bits for wagons and other stuff too. If it's whitemetal then I think they just cast what you need.

Speaking of Hymeks

Simon how is yours comming on? for mine so far the Bogies, fuel tank and roof finished, buffer beam installed but still has abit of work to do with the cab ends and hand rails, but once that is done it should not be too long before its finished :o .

Are you going to add some cab detail? as I was looking at scratch building mine (which will be a very basic representation).

Cheers

progress... what's that? Got both bufferbeams done, though not attached. Made up a subframe from square section brass tubing and built both bogie inner chassis, inculding mounting a mashima horizontally driving both axles and fitting a flywheel on one bogie. Bogie sideframes are built, just need to superdetail them and attach to inners. Cut out the old battery holders, still need to do some work on that so that the subframe fits nicely. Fuel tank built and mounted on subframe.
Cab interior... was going to see if one of Steve Beatties kits could be modified to suit. JLTRT dont do cab kits...
Im doing mine as a "what if"... (IMTS!) What if BR kept a small fleet of say 10 locos (and recovered all the spares from the rest) and fitted ETH... what if they survived into privatisation... and got refurbished with Group Standard lights...

Well, the body is now sitting on the brass 'chassis' that I made up, I've just cut a section out of the box section to allow part of molding to fit in. I just need to get the ride height correct and then attach the fuel tank before moving on to finishing the bogies and the rest of it!

MORE progress!! I have set the ride height and the chassis is in the process of being glued into the bodyshell! If I keep this rate up I will have it finished in 5 years!!
